Haunting Lessons The Dimension War Book 1 eBook Robert Chazz Chute Holly Pop
I've become a big fan of Chazz' books. It's not very often one finds a writer with such a dark side that has such a great sense of humor. I've read his zombie series, a collection of absolutely hilarious stories, a questionable autobiography, and have just finished "The Haunting Lessons".Robert Chazz Chute has successfully entered into the realm of urban fantasy without forcing the reader completely suspend disbelief. There are no sparkly vampires or shirtless werewolves, but there is a ghost or two and some serious ass-kicking of a few monsters (human and otherwise).
I only have one minor complaint (maybe more of an extreme sense of betrayal): the book was over way too quickly. I'll need more lessons from Tamara before the apocalypse arrives. How can I be ready without all my lessons? My only hope is that Chazz can work fast and doesn't need a lot of sleep. The man can write, but I need to know if he can write FAST!

Haunting Lessons The Dimension War Book 1 eBook Robert Chazz Chute Holly Pop Reviews
Just when I thought I'd be able to stop reading Chazz' books, The Haunting Lessons appears. There are some authors who lose their potency over time. With every phrase and turn of the page I find that Chazz is not one of them. I look forward to every one of his stories with an eagerness befitting that of a child's anticipation on Christmas Eve. I open the covers, careful to not damage the wrapping. To my deep pleasure, The Haunting Lessons rewarded me with that same satisfaction of receiving a favored gift. Simply wonderful!
This is a great book. Tamara is a fantastic character. She is funny and tough. I like strong female characters in my urban fantasy. I am a huge fan of Darynda Jones' Charley Davidson series, so I am also a fan of the supernatural and helping ghosts move on. This review is short because I really didn't have any criticisms, this book is that good. The story drew me in and kept my interest. Fantastic. Five stars.
Warning Minor spoilers
This book starts off so well and it has a great main character, Tamara, with some great snark and a great premise but it really doesn't live up to expectations.
Not enough happens throughout the story and what does happen is not very momentous. For instance, Tamara leaves home and travels on a train to her new life and then it's about three chapters before she hooks up with the next important person in the narrative. And nothing much happens in that time - just a lot of wandering around. There is no intricate scene development or scene goals, just a lot of inner monologue which delivers some cool lines but not so many that they kept me charmed when nothing much was happening.
And Tamara has these lessons that she keeps referring to, and randomly adding to, throughout the book. This could have been a good gimmick if it wasn't used all the time for any stray thought that crossed her mind. There was little substance or meaning to the 'lessons' so they lacked impact. Maybe they would have worked as chapter titles and, if each chapter had a lesson title, that might have kept the story action moving along. As it was, the amount of internal meanderings with not much purpose got pretty boring. It made me wonder if this had started life as a short story rather than a novel. At least half the text could be cut out without changing the action of the story at all.
And the final fight scene for this book had nothing riding on the outcome at all and, because of that, the deaths are random and tedious and lack any purpose. In this genre there has to be a major cause at stake in the final confrontation. Winning the final battle should have meaning for the main character on both a personal and a world-saving level with MAJOR consequences if she loses and the final confrontation here just felt like it was slotted in because there needed to be a fight to finish the story. If this fight hadn't happened, nothing in the story would be changed for better or for worse.
It's a shame, this is a great character and with some editing this could have been a good start to a series.
I received this as a gift, and decided to just take a quick look to decide when I might find the time to begin reading it in earnest. Well, the earnest reading began in that moment, and I couldn't put it down. So much for all those other projects I've been trying to get around to!
The story begins in a quietly quirky way - enough to get you interested in the main character. I liked the humour and the writing style a lot. Then the story sucks you in and doesn't let you go until you finally reach the ever unfolding ... end. Well, it's not the end. And I'm really glad about that. I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of this series, but not before I make some space in my working calendar, otherwise I'm afraid I'll never get back to it. If you enjoy Anthony Horowitz, this series is for you. If you enjoy something with a kick-ass female taking the lead - this one's for you. If you just love to go along for the ride - and what a ride! - well ... you can guess. This is really worth a read. Loved it!
The Haunting Lessons by Robert Chazz Chute and Holly Pop is a fantastic paranormal trip with a girl as she learns about ghosts and more. The way the book is presented is unique and clever, they tell part of the story then present the "lesson" learned. The book is full of wit and fun but at the same time it has tenderness, action, and thrills. The story has a strong female lead and we follow her as a farm girl to a city girl. A girl that sees one ghost to seeing hundreds. From freaking out at seeing one ghost to fighting demons without a second thought. My heart was broken one minute and I was giggling the next, what was this book doing to me! I loved it. I ached for more. I can't wait for the next book to come out! The plot is well planned with surprises even to the very end that caught me off guard. The characters are complex and the dialogue witty and believable. A must read for those tired of the everyday ghost story. This one is a true gem. I received this book for a honest review from NetGalley and I am so glad I did, I might never have found this book. Thank you dear authors for such a wonderful book!
